How Much Does Therapy Cost in Calgary? (2026 Guide)

Updated: 22 hours ago
If you are thinking about therapy, the price is usually one of the first questions. It is also one of the hardest to get a straight answer to. Here is what sessions cost in Calgary in 2026, what your benefits plan is likely to cover, and how to make the most of it.
The short answer
Most private therapy sessions in Calgary cost between $160 and $250 for 50 minutes. Where a session falls in that range depends mostly on the clinician's registration:
Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC) and counselling therapists: about $160 to $200
Registered Social Workers (RSW): about $200 to $220
Provisional psychologists: about $150 to $235
Registered psychologists: about $229 to $250. The Psychologists' Association of Alberta recommends $235.
These ranges come from fees that Calgary practices publish on their own websites as of fall 2026.

Will my insurance cover it?
Most extended health plans in Alberta include some coverage for mental health. What matters is the amount and which professionals your plan names. Before you book, it helps to check three things with your plan:
Which professionals are covered. Many plans list "psychologist". Some also list "registered social worker", "counselling therapist" or "Canadian Certified Counsellor".
Whether a provisional psychologist is covered. Many plans do, but it is worth asking directly.
How much is covered per session and per year, and whether there is a per-visit maximum.
Direct billing may be available for some plans, so you only pay the difference. For other plans, you pay at the session and submit your receipt. You can find our list of insurers on our Direct Billing page.
What is a provisional psychologist?
In Alberta, a provisional psychologist has completed a graduate degree in psychology and is registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists. They are finishing their supervised practice hours before full registration, and they provide psychological services under the supervision of a registered psychologist.
For you, the main practical differences are insurance (check that your plan accepts provisional psychologists) and price, which can be the same as or a little below a registered psychologist's fee. Our guide "Psychologist, Provisional Psychologist or Counsellor?" goes into this in more detail.
Ways to make therapy more affordable
Use your benefits plan first, and check whether a spouse's plan adds more coverage.
Ask about 80-minute sessions. Fewer, longer sessions can suit some kinds of work, such as EMDR or couples sessions.
Keep your receipts. Sessions with a psychologist can count toward the medical expense tax credit; sessions with other providers may not. A tax professional can confirm what applies to you.
If cost is a barrier, ask us in your consult. If we are not the right fit for your budget, we will point you toward options that are.
